Norsemen Pillage Riverside Lands Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup - Old Meadonians 2 Norsemen 4
Old Meadonians were peremptorily rushed out of the A.F.A. senior cup by methodical, fit and extremely effective raiders, Norsemen, currently thrusting at the top of the second division of the Southern Amateur League, who pillaged Riverside Lands to be three up at half time from an early gift and a two goal rush with the jaffas beckoning and a comfortable four goals clear ten minutes later. Such was the domination achieved by the visitors in this period that, at times, and in all areas of the pitch, it looked as if Meads were two men short. In actual fact, as if in a delayed Xmas hangover, in metaphorical terms, Meads didn’t turn up till after the interval when Norsemen, uncharacteristically, took their foot off the accelerator in an unnatural show of benevolence to allow their hosts to claw back a modicum of self respect. The somewhat generous opinion from the stands was that the malaise was due more to tactical failure rather than general malingering and it was not until Meads switched to their trusted three-five-two formation, favouring the pace of Ed Glover and Peter Eguae that they showed anything like real form. As a consequence Norsemen might have rued their generosity as chances came like manna. However, only two were taken near the final whistle when, first Nick Jones bundled the ball in from a melee and then Glover scored from the spot after Colin Hawkins was upended. Team: Greening, Graham, (Palmer), Pointer, (Jaap), Thompson, Rhone, Glover, Gerrish, Jones, Eguae, Hawkins.
