Meads Move Into Fourth Round With Convincing Win Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup: Old Belgravians 0 Old Meadonians 3
Holders, Old Meadonians, moved into the fourth round of the Amateur Football Alliance senior cup with a convincing win over Old Belgravians from the division below them at Dulwich on Saturday although their passage might have been less smooth had their hosts been less shy in front of goal. With Meads’ ace striker, Leon Smith, away on a coaching course young aspirant, Alex Jones from the reserves, again made his mark with a goal and an assist. Ed Glover, back in his favourite position, up front, got Meads’ first on twenty minutes, latching onto a Luke Graham cross which was flicked on by Jones at the near post and making no fuss from twelve yards. The in form Peter Eguae got the second fifteen minutes later cutting back from the left inside two defenders to score with a right foot cross shot. After the interval Belgravians came out and gave the visitors a torrid fifteen minutes but were profligate near goal. It was against the run of play that Meads sealed the result, Alex Jones breaking away to score on the run from just inside the area. The only other incidents of note were contrasting efforts by the referee, seemingly to even things up as first he denied Glover’s stone cold shout for a penalty and then harshly deemed Liam Palmer’s clean tackle to be illegal. However, as Shannon Toyne saved the spot kick there was no sweat. Team: Toyne, Graham, Pilcher, Palmer, Caran, Lovell, Gerrish, Thompson, Eguae, Glover, Jones.
