Old Meads 'Score At Will' Against League Champions Amateur Football Combination Premier Division: Old Meadonians 5 Old Aloysians 2
League champions Old Aloysians came to Riverside Lands unbeaten so far this season and left with their tales firmly between their legs, having been thoroughly out played by an Old Meadonians team who came into form with a vengeance. In fact this was, for Meads, sweet revenge for a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Aloysians at the end of last season when the latter clinched the league title. From beginning to end the visitors could do nothing right while for their hosts everything turned to gold as they seemed capable of scoring at will. It took Meads just ten minutes to take the lead in the first of many sweeping moves which cut the visitors’ midfield to ribbons. The ball broke to Michael Richards on the halfway line and his instant ball inside the fullback put Luke Graham free on the right. Graham’s deep cross gave the speeding Peter Eguae the chance to crash his header past the helpless keeper. Five minutes later Will Gerrish, in his second start since knee surgery nine months ago scored the next with a screamer into the roof of the net from thirty five yards. Now Ed Glover got free on the right to put the ball to the far post but this time Eguae’s header skimmed just over. Meads’ continuous pressure was not to go unrewarded as, just before halftime, Leon Smith picked the ball up thirty yards out glided past his marker and finished carefully into the far corner of the net. The second half saw the hosts relentlessly running the visitors ragged and putting in two more. Ten minutes in Glover and Richards made simultaneous diagonal runs to pull Aloysians’ central defenders wide and sub Pete Lovell fed Eguae through the middle to notch his second. This was Eguae’s last act as, sensing an off the ball attack from behind he swung an arm in defence and was adjudged the aggressor. Meads saved the best for last. With ten minutes on the clock a scintillating four man move ended with Glover delivering another deep cross which was met by Smith’s flying volley. The MoM award went jointly to Eguae and Smith.
