Old Meadonians Open League Programme With Draw Amateur Football Combination Premier Division : Old Meadonians 2 Parkfield 2
It was work still in the progress of rebuilding as Old Meadonians opened their league programme by playing benevolent hosts to promotees Parkfield at Riverside Lands on Saturday. The word ‘profligate’ might be a better way to describe Meads as, seemingly coasting two nil up to a comfortable victory, they contrived, with just twenty minutes to go, to give away their advantage to visitors who hardly deserved their point and ended up pinching themselves. There was a Jekyll and Hyde performance from Andy Thompson as, on twenty minutes, he volleyed in from ten yards after Leon Smith’s shot had been blocked only later to turn villain by tipping over a shot to be sent off. Meads’ second goal came as a result of the best move of the match. Ed Glover worked the ball down the left and fed it in to Smith who laid it on for Mike Richards to finish crisply from the edge of the area. Even after Parkfield’s first goal Meads had chances to restore their cushion when, twice, Smith was unlucky. Instead they tamely gave up the two points in a anticlimactic finish.
