Injury Smitten Meads Drop Three Points Amateur Football Combination Premier Division: Old Parmiterians 2 Old Meadonians 1
Injury smitten Old Meadonians are running the risk of slipping from mediocre mid table into the relegation zone after dropping three points to a grateful Old Parmiterians who promptly moved up to third. It took the hosts just three minutes to open their account as the ball was carried thirty yards down the right through three weak challenges. However, there was a distinct element of luck around when the subsequent cross was charged down and the loose ball fell conveniently to be slotted in from ten yards. The hosts then subjected their hapless visitors to a twenty minutes blitzkrieg during they hit the post twice and had a goal disallowed for offside. All Meads could muster in reply before halftime were two crosses which came to nothing and a twenty yard shot from striker Kevin Smith which was just over. Meads began the second half by asking more questions but without being able to apply the finishing touch. Their min-resurgence was cut off before it could blossom by a second piece of bad luck. On the hour a ball over the top caught the defence square and when keeper Shannon Toyne brilliantly blocked the shot from close range the ball cannoned off centre-back Liam Palmer into the net. Meads then gambled by bringing on a partially fit Peter Eguae whose pace did perk up the visitors’ attack. With ten minutes Meads were awarded a penalty for hands which mid-fielder Ed Glover converted but there was to be no miracle recovery.
