Greene King has submitted plans for significant refurbishment work to be done on the Bull’s Head pub on Strand on the Green, Chiswick.

They want to carry out some reorganisation of the internal layout of the interior of the Grade II listing building, redecorate inside and out, add a fireplace and put in a new seating area at the Thames Road side of the pub next to the car park.

Part of the car park would be given over to the seats and tables which would be demarcated by an applied stone resin bonded to the surface of the existing tarmac. Two parking spaces would be lost. One seating area would then also have raised timber posts with festoon lighting.

The fireplace is currently unused, although the chimney pot with three others is present on the top of the stack. The application states that a new flexible steel liner can be inserted into the existing to serve a proposed smokeless fire.

The ground floor manager’s office would be converted into a trading area.

A full re-decoration of existing finished surfaces is proposed including walls, floors and ceilings.

It is not known how long the pub will need to be closed during the refurbishment.

Some residents of Thames Road are understood to be concerned about possible extra noise from the new seating at the rear of the pub. The Strand on the Green Association has objected to the three benches on the footpath being replaced by three dining tables on the grounds that they will cause congestion at a narrowing section of the footpath. They also say that the introduction of two artificial trees in planters beside the door with ‘fairy lights’ would be out of character with the conservation area footpath.

The application was received on 10 July and the planning reference is P/2019/2544 - 1076/D/L7

We contacted Greene King for comment on the plans but have yet to receive a response.
