Friends of Turnham Green AGM will discuss fountain design, and tree planting
The Friends of Turnham Green will hold their AGM on 14 January and there are two items on the agenda, one of which is causing some controversy. The GLA have offered Turnham Green one of their new Thames Waters water fountains but the design is not finding favour with those who think it too lurid for a heritage setting. The fountain, which comes with free installation and maintenance, has caused headaches for the Friends, who cannot find an appropriate location where it could be placed on the Green. The Friends landscape committee have unanimously voted it it to be inappropriate for such a heritage setting, comparing the design to' the love child of a Smurf and an Exocet Missile'. Hounslow Council are keen to accept the offer as it will be installed for free and maintained, and will make a positive contribution to reducing single use plastic and reducing sugary drinks. The Friends of Turnham Green would like to consult the wider public at their AGM to decide the issue. Another item on the agenda is tree-planting. Gaye Galvin, Hounslow Parks Project Manager will be in attendance. Two issues for discussion - "we have an offer of £5000 to fund tree planting on the Green. Do we want them and if so where?" The Friends have had another busy year working with volunteers to maintain the rockery and wild flower areas, both of which continue to prove hugely popular and as a result take quite a hammering from the stampeding feet of small children. The wild flower meadow has also proved something of a challenge, with thistles threatening to take over and they have been grateful to GoodGym whose volunteers have cleared large swathes of them before jogging off to exercise together! An anonymous donor has now offered money to kick start Abundance's Karen Liebreich for her borough wide campaign to plant 270 000 trees ( one for each resident in Hounslow). The Friends will be soliciting views at the AGM on 14 January about where people would like to see them placed on and around the Green.
