Hounslow Council planners have quickly slapped down a request by developers to remove the requirement for housing to be built in Chiswick to be reserved for older people.

The One Housing Group are demolishing a Victorian house at 23 Sutton Court Road (on the corner of Barrowgate Road). They were given permission to construct nine apartments at the site in a three storey building which are to be reserved for people over 55. Approval was given despite the opposition of over 200 people and local groups which had campaigned to retain the house on architectural and historical grounds.

The developer submitted a request for a ‘non-material amendment’ to be made removing the restrictions on 2 April which would have allowed them to sell the units on the open market. Just a week later, council planners responded that they did not consider such a change as non-material and rejected the application. In a letter to the developer’s agent they said, “the proposal would impact upon the provision of purpose built supported housing in the Borough, the provision of cycle spaces for the intended occupiers and the agreed planning obligations.”

The Council’s Head of Affordable Housing had backed the original scheme saying that it provided greater choice and independence for older people in Hounslow.
