Hounslow Council no longer sponsoring the popular Chiswick event
The organiser of Chiswick’s Super Saturday of Sport has appealed to local businesses to support her in an attempt to keep the event running again this year, despite a withdrawl of funding. Hounslow Council, which has provided funding for the free community day on Turnham Green for the last two years will not be sponsoring the event this year and will redirect the funds towards a similar event in Feltham in June. Kirsten Lonsdale, who spearheaded Super Saturday of Sport in Chiswick, as a legacy of the London Olympics, said she was disappointed at the withdrawal of funds but still intends to go ahead with the event on July 16th. Last year over 8,000 people took part in the free day of sport. It has now expanded to Harrow and Feltham. Chiswick has really embraced Super Saturday and I really believe there is a need for free family events and activities in all communities,” Kirsten said. “I can’t let the event go now because Chiswick families have come to expect it. I am prepared to take the financial risk of running the event in the hope that I can attract local sponsors to cover the operational expenses. Already Sworn & Co have pledged their financial sponsorship for Super Saturday and I need to find a few more businesses to get behind it too.” Pic Kelly Reeves from 2015 Super Saturday Super Saturday of Sport was a finalist in the 2015 national Pride of Sport awards for its contribution to the community. It began as a small children’s event in 2013 in Chiswick to inspire young people to find their sporting passion and expanded to include adult activities in 2014.
