Popular Riverside Walk Needs Upgrading Say Residents

Strand on the Green footpath should be of similar quality to Kew Gardens

Residents at Strand on the Green are seeking improvements to the popular riverside walk by the Thames which they say has been neglected by Hounslow Council for years.

A recent newspaper article has shown what the footpath would look like resurfaced with bonded resin, similar to that at Kew Gardens Broad Walk ( pictured above). Strand on the Green Residents Association (SoGA) have now asked Hounslow Council to earmark surplus S106 funding for this.

Three years ago local people took the then MP Mary Macleod around the area, and showed her a stretch of about 800 metres where the surface of the pavements was uneven and dangerous to pedestrians. A retaining wall support structure was tipping into the Thames and in urgent need of strengthening.

Hounslow Highways promised works would be carried out but other than some work on the retaining wall and coping stones, the area has not been scheduled for repair.

Hounslow Council is responsible for the road and retaining wall as it is part of the public highway. Three years ago they said;" Regarding the footpath which runs above the wall, this will be maintained and is scheduled for resurfacing works under the Hounslow Highways contract."

No such resurfacing work has been carried out according to locals.They are not in favour of tarmac being used to resurface the area.

A local said it was a shame that a conservation area with a riverside walk which was popular with locals and visitors throughout the year, could be left with an uneven footpath, dead trees and weeds not cut down.
