Specialist and vintage paint retailer was founded in 1829
The specialist and vintage paint retailer Craig & Rose is opening shortly in Chiswick. The company, whose products are stocked in Homebase, is having the finishing touches put on its new premises at 161 Chiswick High Road and is due to open shortly. Craig & Rose claim to be the oldest paint manufacturers in the UK dating back to 1829. The company was founded by James Craig and Hugh Rose, two young Scottish entrepreneurs who met in Edinburgh and set up in business together in 1829 when they were both only in their early twenties. They started out as oil merchants, and traded both in shale and whale oil, linseed oil and olive oil – oils for a multitude of uses, from lubricating the wheels of the steam trains to lighting the lamps of Edinburgh’s streets. With oil as a base for paint, they shifted to manufacturing and opened a large paint mill in Leith in 1874. April 22, 2018 |
