Helen Cross is one of eight party hopefuls seeking selection in London
Chiswick resident and businesswoman, Helen Cross, has been selected as one of the Liberal Democrats' candidates for London in the European Parliament elections on May 23rd. Helen stood as a Liberal Democrat council candidate in the Hounslow local elections in May 2018 and is one of eight Liberal Democrats potentially up for selection on the London list. Helen said: ‘‘The European Parliament elections are an opportunity for the millions of Londoners who voted Remain to send a strong, clear signal to the Tory Government and the Brexit-loving Jeremy Corbyn that we need a second vote on the government's deal. Londoners should not have the future of investment, jobs, their European neighbours and the NHS put at risk by a shambolic Brexit.’’ The party are hoping that local residents who voted Remain will turn out and support the Liberal Democrats whether they are traditionally Tory or Labour voters. Cross said: ‘‘My message to Labour voters who are pro European is this. A vote for Labour is a vote for Brexit. If you want to have a second referendum with Remain on the ballot then the only sensible vote in May’s European elections is for the Liberal Democrats. The same is true for pro European Tories.’’ Those residents
who are not yet registered and who are eligible to vote in the European
Parliament elections can register up until Tuesday, 7 May. The Liberal Democrats recently opened a new branch for Chiswick following what they describe as "a major upturn in membership in the various W4 postcodes." The local party is appealing for more local residents to join either as full time members or as supporters under the national party’s new registration scheme. The local branch, which is part of the Hounslow Borough Liberal Democrats, is the first time the Liberal Democrats have had a branch in Chiswick for some years. The local party increased its vote share at the local elections in May 2018 and has been active on the CS9 and Heathrow consultations among other recent issues. It has now elected a new executive team to focus on campaigning for local and London wide issues including next year’s Greater London Authority elections. Chiswick residents wishing to join the party can sign
up via this webpage or contact the local
team via their Facebook page. |
