Professor Andrew Saint at the Arts Educational School
On Wednesday May 20th at 8.15pm in Arts Ed's Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Theatre, the Bedford Park Society presents a Centenary Lecture on Jonathan Carr The talk will be given by Professor Andrew Saint. Andrew Saint’s title is Bedford Park: where did it come from and what did it lead to? A reassessment on the centenary of Jonathan Carr’s death. With its forward-looking architecture, community facilities and village layout, Bedford Park was a landmark in the history of garden suburbs and cities. Jonathan Carr's original 1875 purchase of 24 acres near Turnham Green and his development of the area as housing for the progressive middle classes meant that he was instrumental in determining its character. Andrew Saint will explore Carr's role, the sources of his ideas and his influence on the subsequent evolution of the garden suburb.
He has specialist knowledge of Bedford Park and is the author of an important biography of Norman Shaw, the leading architect of Bedford Park. He is now editor of the Survey of London and has held the post of Professor in the Department of Architecture of the University of Cambridge. Tickets are now available from Zecca, 88 Turnham Green Terrace, W4 1QN. You can also purchase tickets by post from Zecca. Tickets are £10 payable in cash or by cheque.
