Significant numbers are expected on Chiswick High Road this Sunday (6 September) for the first Chiswick Flower Market.

The organisers have been delighted to see their even was designated as Time Out’s top London event for September and it has also been featured in the Financial Times.

Along with lots of other coverage on radio, press and social media, it is believed that the turnout will be at the high end of expectations and an overflow car park has been set up in St. Mary’s RC Primary School on Duke Road at a cost of £6. Drivers are reminded that there is no direct access to Duke Road from Chiswick High Road.

Fuller’s shire horses will be at the launch decorated with flowers and traditional hop bines and Chiswick House is bringing the Kitchen Garden harvest to the High Road.

With the stalls all booked out some time ago with a wide range of flower and gardening businesses taking part, one of the organisers said ‘It’s looking set fair’ for them to achieve their ambition of establishing ‘the Columbia Road of the west’. Hundreds of people come from a wide area to visit the market in east London every Sunday.

Specialist plant growers, florists, innovative new horticulture businesses and well-established traders from other markets including Columbia Road will be selling a wide selection of flowers, plants, bedding, bouquets speciality offers and all aspects of horticulture.

Steve Burridge whose family have been selling flowers at Columbia Road for nearly 100 years says, “I want to come because I want to sell more plants! I have a good feeling about this one.”

The market will be open from 9.30am to 3pm and every first Sunday of the month thereafter.

Visitors can buy cut flowers from local florist Pot Pourri, and from sustainable growers Electric Daisy Flower Farm. Children can indulge in Herboo’s nature boxes. Pepperpot Herbs, Chiswick’s Ailand and local horticultural charity Cultivate London will also be there with lots on offer.

The Council in conjunction with Sustrans is providing a unique same day cargo bike delivery service for the market. Customers will be able to have their flowers delivered on the same day, free of charge, to anywhere within a two-mile radius of Chiswick (W4 postcode).

Karen Liebreich, Director of the Chiswick Road Flower Market said: “This is a happy, positive event, designed to act as a catalyst to revive the High Road, bringing fresh footfall, spending, fun and greenery to the area.”

The market aims to provide a safe shopping environment by implementing a range of Covid-secure measures including a one-way system, provision of hand sanitiser and social distancing where possible. All visitors are strongly advised to wear a face covering, unless exempt while in the market space. Trained volunteers will also be on hand to support customers.

Cllr Katherine Dunne, Cabinet Member for Communities and Climate Emergency, said: “We are excited to have a flower market in our borough, it promises to plant a smile during these challenging times. The residents who have started this enterprise have done a fantastic job working with local businesses to found the market. I would encourage residents to visit the market and please remember to stay safe,

The leader of Hounslow Council, Steve Curran said, “This is fantastic for the borough and I hope many of you will be able to visit and support our local traders, while of course following social distancing.”
