With Stephanie Waite (violin) Dan Shilladay (viola)
and Sandra Porter (mezzo-soprano)
The Nonesuch Orchestra will give a lunchtime Concert for
Lent on Thursday 21 March at 1.30pm at St Alban’s Church, Acton Green.
Following the Nonesuch Orchestra’s performances of Stravinsky’s Apollo last summer with dancers
from Ballet4Life, conductor Dan Shilladay has curated another programme of musical delights.
The first, Haydn’s Symphony No 26 ‘Lamentatione’, was written for Easter week and includes a
motif derived from an Easter plainsong chant, in which the Orchestra will be joined by musicians
from Orchard House School. Locally-based mezzo-soprano Sandra Porter will then sing two arias,
Erbarme Dich from Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Dopo notte from Handel’s opera Ariodante.
Finally Dan will put down his baton and take up his viola, to join Stephanie Waite, the leader of
the Nonesuch Orchestra, in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola. The concert is a collaboration between the Nonesuch Orchestra and St Alban’s Church (part of
Christ Church W4) and aims both to provide quality lunchtime classical music - in particular for
those who cannot easily access evening concerts - and to raise money for the ongoing refurbishment
of St Alban’s Church. The congregation are keen to welcome people to the Church both to see the
refurbished interior and to enjoy its excellent acoustics. So far the Church has received a new roof,
heating system, seating, stage, storage and toilets, and the current fundraising project aims to finish
a Prayer Chapel with independent access, that will be available 24/7 for prayer, healing, rest and
spiritual refreshment.
The concert will begin at 1.30pm and the Church will be serving a light lunch from 12.45pm, so
visitors can meet, chat and enjoy the beautiful interior of the Church before the Concert.
Tickets cost £10, £5, £2 and can be purchased online and in
person from Christ Church Turnham Green W4 5DT Tuesday-Friday 12.30-2.30pm.
