London Early Opera programme is themed around the life and times of the artist
June 18, 2023 A concert with narration titled Hogarth’s Garden is to be performed by London Early Opera at St. Nicholas Church. The venue is close to the artist’s burial pace as well as his home and will feature works from his lifetime. Curated by artistic director and conductor, Bridget Cunningham, this concert includes music from Handel’s Foundling Hospital Anthem, Semele, L’Allegro, catches and cantatas connecting themes of Handel’s paintings and Hogarth’s 18th-century London life to musical masterpieces. The cemetery at St Nicholas Church is the resting place of the artist William Hogarth who inspired much of the artwork at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens and was a governor and supporter of the Foundling Hospital where the composer George Frideric Handel performed. When Handel lived in Mayfair, he owned many paintings and prints, although he had none of Hogarth’s caricatures, he owned pastoral, historical and biblical works including works by Canaletto and Watteau and was well acquainted with many popular artists of the day. The music performed by London Early Opera’s new choir with Charles MacDougall and baroque orchestra will be enhanced with narrations and images from Lars Tharp, ceramics and Hogarth historian from BBC Antiques Roadshow. London Early Opera are based in Chiswick near to where the poet Alexander Pope, Lord Burlington and Handel’s singer Elisabeth Duparc lived in the 18th century. The event is taking place on Friday 23 June at 7.30pm and tickets which cost £15 or £10 for concessions can be purchased online.
