Dave Cousins, lead singer and songwriter of the legendary Strawbs, returns to the stage for an evening of songs and stories relating to growing up and living in Chiswick.

The one-off fundraising event, ‘Growing Up in Chiswick’ is being held at The George IV on Monday 21 November.

His earliest memories are of Beverley Road Infants School and going to Saturday Morning Pictures as an ABC Minor. In the 1970s, Dave Cousins returned to live in Chiswick and rehearsed with Strawbs at the Mawson Arms before recording several of the band’s classic albums. Dave will talk about visiting his friend and hero, Lonnie Donegan, at his house on Chiswick Mall. Strawbs 30th Anniversary Concert was held in the grounds of Chiswick House in 1998.

Dave Cousins is donating all proceeds from the event to the Commonwealth Medical Trust, (Commat), of which he is a trustee, to support its joint project with SafeHands to provide water tanks to help protect the health of women and children in remote parts of the African. Donations and proceeds from the event will be doubled as part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge. The event is sponsored by Chiswick-based Cherry Red Records.

Erica Belanger of SafeHands said, “Dave Cousins of the Straws is a rock legend with deep connections to Chiswick. We are delighted to have his support to raise vital funds to help give women in rural Uganda access to water and lifesaving healthcare. Proceeds and donations made during the event will be doubled as part of our Big Give Christmas Appeal. People who are able to give during a cost of living crisis can therefore do so knowing that their donations will go twice as far. For more information about our Big Give Christmas Challenge visit www.safehands.org/biggive.”

Tickets cost £25 for general admission or £150 for a reserved banquette for six people.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We’ve always done that and won’t be changing, in fact we’d like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.
