This Bank Holiday weekend will see three groups of local volunteers take up the call for a Great British Spring Clean from Keep Britain Tidy.

The challenge which is being organised by local councillors is to collect 50 bags full of waste litter across Chiswick.

Starting this Friday, 28 May #Litterheroes on the #MillionMileMission are clearing litter from our streets as part of the campaign. In the past 12 months our outdoor spaces and places have mattered to us more than ever before and you are asked to join people in Chiswick and show some love for those special places that helped us through lockdown.

As part of the initiative Chiswick Clean Up returns this Sunday 30 May with a whole new approach, partnering up the West Chiswick and Gunnersbury Society, to kick start the campaign to tackle litter and fly tipping.

Working alongside Hounslow Highways, the environmental services provider for the London Borough of Hounslow, the group will be start from Gunnersbury Station at 2pm head West towards Chiswick roundabout, South towards Wellesley Road and East toward Turnham Green. They will be working for an hour in a socially distanced manner with refreshment provided. If you’d like to take part contact Councillor Ron Mushiso on 07976702887 or Ron.mushiso@hounslow.gov.uk.

At the same time a small group led by students completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award will combine with members of the congregation of Christ Church and the Friends of Turnham Green group to work their way around the perimeter of the green and the Rockery. Contact Cllr Joanna Biddolph at joanna.biddolph@hounslow.gov.uk or on 07976 703446.

Over in the Chiswick Homefields ward at 2pm a group will be organised to clear the verges and shrubs on the A4 at the top of Airedale Avenue, Netheravon Road and the British Grove. Contact Cllr Gerald McGregor gerald.mcgregor@hounslow.gov.uk or 07866 784821.

In the Chiswick Riverside ward, across the other side of the A4 a small team will be giving up an hour to help collect litter in the Chiswick House Grounds meeting at the café at 2pm. Refreshment at the end will provided by management at Chiswick House. Contact Cllr Sam Hearn at sam.hearn@hounslow.gov.uk or on
07833 376222,

Cllr Ron Mushiso says, “We are running the event in every part of the Chiswick wards so that more people can participate and send out a loud message to everyone; that as we open up and return to some form of normality, we can be more considerate when dispensing of our own rubbish ~ We should be able to find a nearby rubbish bin and, failing that, we can and should take our litter home. “
