Professor Chris Wise taking part in Chiswick Pier's Talk by the Thames series
Chiswick Pier Trust’s final webinar in this series of Talks by the Thames is Engineering, Humanity and Rivers by Professor Chris Wise which takes place on Tuesday 25 May at 7.30pm. He will look at some of the challenges of building on, under or near London’s tidal river to create beautiful and exciting spaces for people to enjoy. Many will be familiar with Chris Wise’s work locally, as his company, Expedition Engineering, were the lead designers on the footbridge to Chiswick Business Park, which was chosen as one of the 10 best bridges in the world by Dezeen last year, and voted Chiswick’s 51st building jointly with St Michael and All Angels. Chris Wise is recognised as one of the most inventive engineers of his generation. His handiwork while a director of Arup on the ‘wobbly’ Millennium Bridge garnered huge public attention, and he is still helping create design solutions which improve public spaces on the banks of our rivers. His company, Expedition, engineered the Olympic Velodrome and the park-wide Sustainable Water Strategy in 2012; looked at the engineering challenges of the Drebbel, a wooden submarine rowed down the Thames in 1624, and has designed more bridges like the multi-award winning Infinity Bridge, as well as the Diamond Jubilee Bridge. Chris has been a design Professor at Imperial, Yale and UCL, and is now the senior director at Expedition Engineering working with clients, and mentoring up-and-coming engineers. This webinar is free, although any donations will be gratefully received to support Chiswick Pier Trust in its work of bringing people to the River. Like most charities, the Trust has been affected by lockdown and would be grateful for any support you can give. Tickets can be obtained from chiswickpier.org.uk and it is suggested that you book your tickets in good time prior to the start of the talk. An email from Eventbrite containing the zoom link will be sent to you before the webinar. The Chiswick Pier Trust runs the Chiswick Pier and Pier House. In this role it manages the commercial and residential moorings at the Pier, as well as venue and conference hire at Pier House. The trust works to engage people with the River Thames. It provides access to the Thames and support major river events, as well as organising events of its own. It also hosts an annual season of 'Talks by the Thames' which highlight the history, wildlife and ecology of the Thames. For further information on the Pier check the Chiswick Pier Trust's web site.
