In 2009, Steffan took a 15ft dinghy on a rowing and sailing trip around London, using the Thames and the city’s canals. The book he wrote of his experiences, Circle Line, won numerous accolades in the national press. Steffan’s day job is as associate editor of Classic Boat magazine.

Circle Line is a celebration and meditation on the river and all things associated with it. It is filled with anecdotes that are both historical and personal, as well as technical suggestions. From a local perspective, these include sharing tips on navigating Brentford’s unmanned locks, dealing with hecklers from the shore, or ‘shooting’ Richmond Bridge.

Circle Line talks about the logistics, joys and the pitfalls of undertaking a trip like this.
Steffan observes life by the river from on the river and readers have a glimpse of a different London, a London life that is familiar to those who spend time on the river.
