December 10, 7.30pm - The dirty, rude and crude Thames (beyond the watershed), a talk by Andy Hawkins at Chiswick Pier House, W4 2UG.

Andy Hawkins from Thames Explorer Trust will be answering such important, lewd and downright outrageous questions such as:

  • Why was dog poo so expensive to buy and who bought it?
  • Why were Thames watermen consistently being accused of being pimps?
  • Why did London's early train operators deliberately put pigs in with the paying customers?

He will also present the results of his search for rude street names and try and enlist the audience in his doomed one-man campaign to reinstate some of the seamier street names to their previous splendour. Slut's Hole next to St Nicholas's Church being near the top of his list!

A light hearted, adult only talk which will debunk some stories, confirm others and provide a festive giggle to all.

The talk is part of a series organised by the Chiswick Pier Trust, a charity that puts people in touch with the River Thames.

Doors open at 7pm and the event will start at 7.30pm. Free to Chiswick Pier Trust Members, £3 to non-members. Chiswick Pier and Chiswick Pier House are at the end of Corney Road and Edensor Road, Chiswick, W4 2UG. 'Road
