As ITV prepares to serialise Vanity Fair (which opens in Chiswick
Mall, where WM Thackeray went to school), the There is no shortage of candidates. Chiswick was the home of, or setting for works by, Alexander Pope, WM Thackeray, WB Yeats, EM Forster, GK Chesterton, Patrick Hamilton, Ford Madox Ford, Harold Pinter, Anthony Burgess, John Osborne, Nancy Mitford, Dylan Thomas, Sir John Betjeman, Sir Arthur Pinero and, in the 21st century, Celia Brayfield, Mavis Cheek, Adele Parks, Bryan Appleyard and many more.
