Cocker Spaniel Puppy Takes Top Prize at Chiswick House Dog Show
Hundreds of dog lovers and owners attend after 'year off'

The Chiswick House Dog Show returned last Sunday (26 September) to the cricket pitch in Chiswick House Grounds.
The “Biggest Dog Show in London” lived up to its name – and hundreds of dog owners, handlers, walkers, lovers, all swarmed to welcome it back after a “year off”.
Whilst in some ways it was different this year (only three rings instead of four to make it easier for social distancing, no Green Room for the celebrity judges, no Flyball demos), there was the usual mix of commercial stalls (selling all things canine as well as candles, clothes, paintings, etc) and catering stalls (fish ‘n chips, pizzas, burgers, biscuits, cakes and tarts). The ever-popular ‘Doggy Dash’ was there again – manned by volunteers from the Dogs Trust Re-Homing Centre at Harefield.
The theme this year commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Glastonbury Festival (and, like the Olympics, a year late!). This was reflected in the two Fancy Dress classes (one for children and their dog, one for adults and dog) and especially in the former when the winners were the “Rolling Bones,” a group of children and their dogs complete with instruments!
The other 14 classes ranged from “Best Groomed” to “Best Rescue,” and from “Best Young Handler” to “Best Veteran,” along with all the ‘best-looking’ bitches and handsomest dogs in all their age groups. All those pandemic puppies were out in force.
Mel Giedroyc was there again – this time judging “Waggiest Tail” and “Best Youngster Bitch, 1-2 years, “ and those judging stalwarts, Neil Dudgeon (from Midsomer Murders) and Harriet Thorpe (known for Ab Fab and Mamma Mia) did their best to judge “My Dog’s got Talent,” aided by comedian Herbie Adams trying to keep a straight face (and order) as the class MC.

The competition for ‘Best in Show’ was as tough as ever, with the winners of each class represented. The winner for 2021 was an endearing 13-week-old cocker spaniel puppy, Little Chief, accompanied by his owner, 10 year-old Ralphine.
The show was, as usual, sponsored by estate agent, John D Wood, and the three rings were sponsored by DogTown, Butternut Box, and Wolfevets. Each class was also sponsored – either by stall-holders or by local businesses.
It takes over 150 volunteers to put on this community event – and all the monies raised go towards the upkeep of Chiswick House grounds and for dog-related activities within the grounds. The show is organised by a committee of 10 dog-loving/owning locals who, under normal circumstances, would start the process of planning the show early in the year but this time had to put it on at slightly shorter notice.
