Hounslow Council has apologised for the delay in removing the decaying remains of a dead dog from Dukes Meadows.

A local resident complained that the dog had been lying near the allotments since 15 October.

"Many people walk their dogs there and there is a children’s play area nearby. I have spoken to several people who had tried calling the council’s various departments to remove the dog since Saturday but it remains still (on Wednesday)" she said.

She said a member of the Carillion team had wrapped the dog in black bin bags to help out while he enlisted the help of a supervisor.

"He is not allowed to remove an animal with his vehicle and put it into landfill. Protocol requires a Vet to attend, scan the dog to see if it is chipped and only then can arrangements for the body to be removed."

The dog was left on the top of the hill, at the allotment end of the 'orchard' on the hill, she said. It appeared as if somebody had dug a shallow hole as if to bury the animal, who appeared to be a crossbred staffie.

Councillor Corinna Smart, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Leisure, Hounslow Council, said: “A Carillion member of staff, who manage parks on behalf of the council, became aware of the deceased dog and reported it the operations team.

“Sadly, it has taken us longer than expected to remove the dog. We are looking into what went wrong and have introduced appropriate measures to ensure these delays don’t happen again.

“The dog has been removed by the council’s animal warden team who are trying to identify who the owner is.

“Both Carillion and the council apologise for any distress caused while we dealt with this sensitive issue.”
