Some homes in Bedford Park were evacuated this Friday morning (3 May) when a device, possibly an ordnance dating back to the Second World War, was uncovered.

It was spotted on Bedford Road, close to Orchard School and the alarm was raised around 10.30am by workmen who are refurbishing the house.

Police arrived on the scene shortly and cordoned off the area.

Residents of about twenty properties were believed to have been evacuated from their homes along Bedford Road and part of Marlborough Crescent. The police cordon was removed after a short period and the area was back to normal after an hour.

The Orchard House primary school, which is in the vicinity, was not affected.

A police statement said, "A device was removed from the location and will now be safely disposed of."

There was no further information made available as to the nature of the device.

However, unexploded WW2 ordnance has previously been found in Chiswick usually uncovered when work is being carried out.
