TfL wants your views on the impact of Chiswick High Road changes
March 26, 2023 The deadline for responding to the latest consultation on Cycleway 9 on Chiswick High Road is Monday 3 April. TfL wants to hear from local people about the changes made to the area since the summer of 2020 including the latest upgrades to the cycleway which have recently been completed. These changes were implemented through and Experimental Traffic Order (ETO) which means that TfL did not have to consult before implementing them but was required to solicit comments during the operation of the changes. At the end of 2022, a new was issued for the latest changes and the survey is part of the trial period relating to that order. TfL says, “We’ve been monitoring the effects of the changes since the experiment began. The effects of the scheme on cycling have so far been very positive. We’ve seen cycling levels in 2022 increase by almost a quarter compared to numbers in 2021 despite construction on Chiswick High Road which has required the closure of the cycle lanes. The effects of the scheme on bus journey times and traffic journey times has been mixed, and complicated by the impact of road works in and around the Chiswick High Road area (including unplanned works on the A4) over the last few months. These works make it difficult to isolate what specific effects the Chiswick High Road scheme might have had on traffic and buses. We will continue to monitor the effect of the scheme and, providing there are no further unplanned works in the area, we would expect that the picture would become clearer over the next few months. We will publish a report to provide an update on the effects of the scheme on cycling, buses and traffic once the London Borough of Hounslow has made a decision about what the future of the scheme should be.” Depending on the results of the survey, it could be decided to issue a permanent traffic order as Hammersmith & Fulham has recently done for its section of Cycleway 9 on King Street after its survey showed that a majority supported the scheme. You can complete the survey on the Have Your Say webpage and register to be kept informed on the progress of the consultation and the proposals.
