Traffic and Transport Issues and the Wonderful Platinum Jubilee |

Councillor Gerald McGregor of Homefields Ward reports back on his week
Work still continues listening to, assisting and supporting local residents. There are a large number of concerns raised by residents across Chiswick and your Conservative Councillors are responding to a range of issues by logging requests, building case work files for a response from the council and trying to find out more details about major planning proposals. A key concern now is height and over building in new projects and the latest plans for Chiswick Terrace involve a range of important retail premises. We can’t wait to get the Chiswick Forum back up and running under new chairman Cllr Ron Mushiso. Traffic and Transport Another disheartening disruption to daily life in Chiswick. Detours of up to a mile and a half are having to be made when Turnham Green Terrace is subject to road works and closure. The site manager indicated to the Local Conservative Councillors just how difficult the job was, with a relatively light covering of tarmac sitting on a concrete sub-surface. Drilling out the concrete to provide a working environment, then assessing the damage in detail, with repairs to the pipework and filling the hole. The aggregate materials supporting the new pipes linking the existing infrastructure were put in place first, before then replacing the concrete raft and finally the new tarmac surface. All the materials dried out quickly allowing the team to use compacting equipment to fully secure any damage. The site manager had inspected the whole length of the terrace and was not optimistic about other holes appearing. The tarmac appeared to be showing some cracks under strain in several places and not in those areas previously repaired. In consequence we may be in for more disruption in the near future. Much of the infrastructure has been in place for more than half a century
The Working surface back in place over a twenty-foot hole, back filled and repaired in record time (thanks to the good weather and their expertise) by the Wimbledon based Cappagh Civil Engineering Group Traffic flowing freely after 12.15 on Wednesday 29 June, seven days earlier than was originally feared Hounslow Council and Ealing Council refused point blank to re-open Fishers Lane to private motor traffic during this further loss of Turnham Green Terrace; at a recent council meeting the new leader, Cllr Rajawat promised to be a listening administration. “ Plus ca change “
There are major concerns for shopkeepers, retailers and traders in Chiswick when this sort of incident occurs as it damages footfall in restaurants and premises and makes transporting goods well-nigh impossible. In this case the silver lining to the cloud is the speed of Hounslow Highways, Thames Water and Cappagh and TfL in responding to this major incident Better news for all the community: A Roll of Honour in Chiswick The Street Party Streets Celebrating Her Majesty the Queen The platinum jubilee celebrations were unique at every level. The events around 4th June captured the imagination of many people; coming out of Covid-19 lockdowns the need to socialise and regain contact with friends and neighbours led to an unprecedented number of parish thanksgiving services and local street and neighbourhood parties. Chiswick Southfield was celebrated a fortnight ago on these pages so let us now look at the three other wards in Chiswick, Gunnersbury Park, Homefields and Riverside. Every street party organised could claim a grant from the Jubilee fund and Hounslow Highways was busy on Public Holiday duty packing up barriers and warning signs and moving them from street to street across the area. Let us truly thank and recognise the public-spirited organisers and volunteers and those who participated, putting new life back into our local communities. Your Councillors Please remember that your Conservative Councillors are here to help and assist all residents in matters concerning your needs in the community and your concerns about local Hounslow Administration in Chiswick. We also act as a conduit by forwarding and escalating concerns and enquiries through Nick Rogers our Local South West Greater London Assemblyman and into Central Government. We are beginning the next four-year cycle of the Council with new colleagues and we are already busy at work having hit the ground running after the Election.
