Hounslow Council Should 'Get Their Act Together' On Roads And Streets

Local Conservatives say flytipping, potholes and litter have increased

Conservatives have called on Labour Councillors to “get their act together” over the Hounslow Highways PFI Contract.

At October’s Borough Council Meeting, Conservative Councillors tabled a motion asking Hounslow Council to protect funding for our most urgent works to roads and streets, making sure they are completed before the end of 2018-19.

However, Labour Councillors amended the motion to say Hounslow is : ‘trying its best endeavours to meet appropriate provision in future budgets for capital investment into the remaining Hounslow streets’

Speaking at the meeting, Chiswick Community Group Champion Councillor Gerald McGregor said, “Labour’s amended motion does nothing to assuage the concerns of Hounslow residents.

From Bedfont to Hounslow and Brentford to Chiswick, we are seeing large amounts of potholes, flytipping and litter due to fortnightly collections, as well as inappropriate lighting structures in Bedford Park and other Conservation Areas.

In March, this year, it was reported by the BBC that Hounslow in 2015-16 was ranked the fourth highest for flytipping. This is a crying shame and a disgrace.”

Turnham Green Councillor Peter Thompson who also spoke, said, “We now learn that not all the roads in Hounslow will be reinstated as originally promised.

I asked Hounslow Highways back in July, at the Chiswick Area Forum, for a list of all the roads in my ward and wider afield, in Chiswick, that have not been re-paved. Unfortunately, I still have not received anything.

The communication is appalling and Labour have done nothing to improve it.”

Hounslow Highways admits that only 60% of the Borough’s roads have been resurfaced in the initial five year capital investment period of the PFI contract.

Conservatives highlighted the way in which the Hounslow Highways PFI contract is managed saying that more must be done on the Council’s side including better monitoring and enforcement and the reviewing of key elements in the contract that could be improved.
