Children from Cavendish School welcomed the Mayor of Hounslow and guests to a WW2 themed party with music, games and afternoon tea. The party was the celebration of a project in which the children researched the wartime experience of people in London, particularly evacuee children.

Educational Archeologist Sarah Dhanjal led sessions in which the children made their own wartime style posters, found out about food rationing, how children entertained themselves and gained an insight into life in wartime Britain. A highlight of the project was a visit by Lotte Moore, who was an evacuee child herself and shared her memories with an enthralled audience

The children were perfect hosts to their guests from St Mary's Nursing Home, their parents and siblings and, of course, the Mayor of Hounslow, who made a wonderful, motivating speech and joined children in dancing the Okey Cokey.

Deputy Head Andrea Glucker said," I would like to thank Kathleen Healy from Dukes Meadows Trust and our project leader Sarah Dhanjal for working with Cavendish again this year. The children loved the lessons and, of course, the Street Party. They got a good insight into how war time affected people's lives: how they suffered and at the same time how they coped through a strong sense of community and togetherness. This history module has not only taught the children about the war, its causes, course and consequences, but also about values -resilience, respect for others, democracy - that our children wish to carry forward into the future. Thanks again; we are looking forward to more exciting projects next year."

Jane Wright Activities Co ordinator at St Mary's Nusing Home said, "All our residents really enjoyed meeting the children and telling their stories of their time in the war years. The pupils were really lovely and took time greeting and chatting with them. They had obviously worked very hard at their project and were enjoying their work."

The project was sponsored by community charity Dukes Meadows Trust, which has a long and valued relationship with the school.
