Fatima-Zahra Yusef will advocate for the rights of young people

Chiswick School are proud to announce that one of its students, Fatima –Zahra Yusuf (seen above in the middle of the picture) has been elected to become the new Deputy Member of the Hounslow Youth Parliament after weeks of campaigning both within school and across the borough.

Andrea Kitteringham, Head of PSHCE / Citizenship said; "We are delighted with the prospect of being represented on the Youth Council for the first time. Fatima-Zahra currently studies Citizenship GCSE and is a keen spokesperson for the rights of young people. She will make an excellent advocate and will work hard for change. We are thrilled that she has this opportunity."

There were 9243 votes cast in total from across the borough, with the two successful candidates announced on Thursday 2nd May at an event hosted by Hounslow Youth Council and Participation People at Hounslow House.

MYPs represent Hounslow on a regional and national basis, helping to engage young people in politics, democracy and citizenship. Chiswick School Headteacher, Mrs Laura Ellener who attended the vote said;

"Teachers at Chiswick have supported Fatima throughout her campaign and we are all so proud of her achievements. She will represent the wonderful students at Chiswick School and other Hounslow Schools with vigour and I am looking forward to celebrating the impact of this work in the future."

They also deliver their own personal manifestos to improve the lives of young people. Last year, Hounslow’s MYPs focused on tackling the issue of knife crime and youth violence and their motion was chosen as one of the top priorities for UK Youth Parliament for the year. Hounslow Youth Council are looking forward to working with both girls to make their campaign promises a reality for the whole Hounslow and national community.
