Report shows percentage attaining admission to 'selective universities'
New figures published by the Sutton Trust show that schools in London and the South East are disproportionately represented in top universities.
There are seven schools in the West and South West London area which send over 80% of their sixth form pupils to what the Trust describes as selective universities. All of them are independent. 19 schools in the area send over 50% of their pupils to selective universities including three in the state sector.
Research has shown that students from London and the South East are dominating admissions to many top universities with students from other parts of the UK being in the minority in Oxford, Bristol, Warwick, King's College Lond and the LSE despite making up over 75% of the population.
A group of five schools including St. Paul's Girls and Boys Schools and Westminster produced 946 Oxbridge entrants over the period 2007-09 – accounting for over one in 20 of all Oxbridge admissions. Meanwhile just under 2000 schools and colleges with less than one Oxbridge entrant a year produced a total of 927 Oxbridge
entrants.
