'Perfect storm' of roadworks, tube engineering works and Rugby World Cup
Significant disruption on local roads is anticipated this weekend in what has been described as the ‘perfect storm’ of disruption for the Chiswick area. There were already planned engineering works which will hit District line and Piccadilly line services and the A316 is due to be closed on both Saturday and Sunday due to the Rugby World Cup semi-finals. On top of this Thames Water have disclosed that emergency repair works are needed that will require the closure of Acton High Street from Sunday morning. It is anticipated that traffic on Saturday will not be significantly worse in the area than on previous occasions when the A316 has closed but Sunday will see significant delays around Chiswick and motorists are advised to avoid travelling after noon if they can. The A316 is closed between London Road and Twickenham Stadium from 1pm to 7.45pm both on Saturday and Sunday. Previously this has caused disruption back to Hogarth Roundabout and Chiswick High Road. There is no District line service between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway for until 1 November starting this Saturday. However any negative impact will be mitigated by the Piccadilly line stopping at Turnham Green at the weekend and London Underground have promised extra trains on the District Line on the days when there are Rugby World Cup matches. There will be a replacement bus service but on Sunday this is likely to be severely disrupted due to the roadworks in Acton and it will only operate between Acton Town and Turnham Green from that day. The Piccadilly line is also closed between Acton Town and Uxbridge for the weekend. Thames Water begin emergency sewer repairs in Acton on Sunday morning which was unanticipated when the other road closures and engineering works were planned. The High Street will be closed between Acton Police Station (Steyne Road) and Gunnersbury Lane with diversions via other local routes signposted. Two-way temporary traffic lights will also be set up on junction of Gunnersbury Lane and the High Street. The road will be closed at 6am on Sunday 25 October and work will be carried out 24 hours a day until the sewer pipe has been repaired and the road resurfaced. The job is expected to take five days.
