New Hope For Local Residents In Campaign Against 'Discriminatory' Paving | ||||
Council will look at 'like with like' paving for Devonshire Road
Fresh hope has emerged for Devonshire Road residents in their fight for paving stones against tarmac pavements. Hounslow Council will “look again” at the issue, said Amrit Mann, deputy council leader and its environment chief, in response to a petition presented at the council’s meeting last night (22nd November). This apparent change followed a dismissal by Mr Mann of a petition from Devonshire Road residents further south, which was presented to the council’s October meeting. The residents have based their challenge on the fact that the area is designated as of 'special character' In a presentation of the latest petition, residents underlined the Highways department’s admission that: “There is no Council policy on footway treatments” and the revelation that all of Devonshire Road is designated in the local plan (adopted September 2015) as an “area of special character” defined as one which “possesses sufficient architectural, townscape and environmental quality to make it of significant local value .. .” The council should “live up to its word to preserve, enhance the high-quality cohesiveness of Devonshire Road,” residents said. They emphasised the road’s “overwhelming local-value significance as a residential road, and a perfectly-situated pedestrian artery to many of Chiswick’s historic assets and five of its conservation areas”.
