Road shut at junction with Chiswick High Road due to utility works
Acton Lane is currently shut at the junction with Chiswick High Road to north bound traffic. It is expected that the closure will remain in place until 5pm on Wednesday 24 August. This means that eastbound traffic cannot turn left into Acton Lane from Chiswick High Road and westbound traffic cannot turn right. Electricity company Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is carrying out maintenance on its network and work to link up new developments nearby is also being done at the same time. The Traffic Order issued by Hounslow Council allows for the closures to be extended up to six months to allow for remedial works or delays but, at this stage, it is thought unlikely that any extension to the closure will be necessary. Vehicles are being diverted via Chiswick High Road, Turnham Green Terrace, South Parade and Acton Lane. Since the closure, the already heavy congestion on the High Road due to roadworks on the A4 and transport strikes has become more severe. Thames Water are working on Gunnersbury Lane during the Acton Lane works which will require multi-way signals to operate meaning an alternate route may be more congested than usual which means an alternative route to the area is also congested. There have been calls from residents of Acton Lane, South Parade and Fishers Lane for the restrictions on the Fishers Lane underpass to be lifted temporarily to allow residents of North Chiswick easier access to their homes.
Sheila Nolan of the Homecross House Residents’ Association said, “We completely concur with this request to reopen Fishers Lane. Those of us who live on Fishers Lane are finding great difficulty in accessing our homes as well as basic services. “ We have asked Ealing Council if it would consider lifting restrictions but it hasn’t yet responded. On previous occasions when Acton Lane has been disrupted by roadworks, it has refused to consider opening up the road to all traffic. “All such works, which require traffic management to enable safe working procedures, have to be approved by the local authority and carried out on the dates permitted by them. “SSEN apologises for any inconvenience this temporary traffic management may cause and would like to reassure its customers that, as a considerate constructor, all works are designed to cause the minimum of disruption.”
