Chiswick Lifeboat Crew Rescue Two Men From Tree | ||||||
Pair climbed up after being cut off by rising tide on Chiswick Eyot
The lifeboat from the Chiswick RNLI station rescued two men who were stranded on Chiswick Eyot this Saturday morning (11 May). They had climbed a tree to get above the water as the rising tide completely covered the island. At 5.15am London Coastguard requested Chiswick lifeboat to investigate a report of people cut off by the tide. They arrived at Chiswick Eyot a couple of minutes later to find the two men in a tree. The lifeboat was carefully manoeuvred through the overhanging branches right up to the tree so the men could descend directly in the boat. The crew checked that the men were unharmed then returned them to Chiswick Pier. RNLI helmsman Steve Alexander commented, ‘People are often tempted to walk to Chiswick Eyot at low tide, not realising that they can be cut off by the flooding tide in a matter of minutes. Fortunately, in this case the men had a mobile phone and managed to call for help. We don’t often need to do a bit of pruning to reach a casualty, but the obstructing branches were all dead and snapped off easily’ Chiswick RNLI lifeboat station is the second busiest in the UK and Ireland. Since The RNLI search and rescue service on the Thames started in 2002, Chiswick Lifeboat has attended over 3,500 incidents and rescued over 1,750 people, and dozens of dogs. The RNLI is entirely funded by public donations.
