Event has already saved an estimated 10 tons of carbon emissions
The event takes place at Christ Church on Turnham Green
Next Saturday (21 October) will be the first anniversary of the Chiswick Repair Café.
Over the last year nine events have been held in Christ Church on Turnham Green which have seen 619 repairs registered, 70% of which were completed successfully.
Nearly two hundred different types of items have been broughy along including jackets and trousers, nutribullets and toasters, picture frames and teddies. 162 knives and tools have also been sharpened.
It is estimated that, in its first year, the Repair Café has saved 10.6 tons of carbon emissions with landfill reduced by 1.2 tonnes. That is the equivalent of a 44,000 mile drive and represents a cost saving of nearly £30,000.
675 people have visited the event and 43 volunteers have given 2,400 hours of their time and served 540 slices of cake.
The organisers say, “We are delighted that the Chiswick Repair Cafe has become such a popular community initiative in just one year. It is inspiring that our event is making the repair of household goods more accessible to so many people, making it easier for people to be part of a more sustainable and
less wasteful economy. We have been supported by our generous and talented volunteers. We look forward to continuing to provide an engaging community experience as well as a useful service to Chiswick locals.”
Next Saturday’s event runs from 10.30am to 1pm with last orders at 12.30pm. Visitors pay for the parts and are asked to make a donation to the Repair Cafe running costs.
The offering will generally include:
● Small electrical /electronic repairs
● Carpentry repairs (e.g. glueing chairs)
● Toy repairs
● Computers & laptops (not mobile phones)
● Knife & tool sharpening
● Sewing repairs: mending /darning
● Small bike repairs
Charlotte, Jill, Kate and Marie-Claire, who set up the café, are a group of locals who are involved with various green initiatives around Chiswick and are part of the Hounslow Environmental Champions programme.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.
Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
We’ve always done that and won’t be changing, in fact we’d like to do more.
However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

If neither of these amounts is suitable for you then contact info@neighbournet.com and we can set up an alternative. All payments are made through a secure web site.
One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.

For businesses we offer the chance to be a corporate sponsor of community content on the site. For £30 plus VAT per month you will be the designated sponsor of at least one article a month with your logo appearing if supplied. If there is a specific community group or initiative you’d like to support we can make sure your sponsorship is featured on related content for a one off payment of £50 plus VAT.
