Kew House School has submitted another planning application (P/2022/2786) in an attempt to expand provision in its sixth form.

It is requesting that Hounslow Council give permission for a change of use for the ground floor units at Wheatstone House, a recently completed residential block near Chiswick Roundabout at 650-654 Chiswick High Road.

The application comes shortly after similar proposal to convert space in Pier House on Strand on the Green to classrooms for sixth formers. This application is still in progress but it is not known if the school sees them as alternatives or if it intends to expand at both sites.

The Wheatstone House site would provide overflow teaching areas for its main location which is a short distance along the road near Kew Bridge. As well as the classroom there would be a fitness studio although students would change in the main school building if they were using this facility.

The area to be converted would include four classrooms for up to 16 students bringing the total number of people using the building up to around 80. The school currently has a total capacity for 600 senior school pupils.

The applicant, Kew House School, (part of The Gardener Schools Group (GSG)) is a local independent school providing senior school education on two sites in the immediate Kew Bridge area: The main school is located at Kew House, 6 Capital interchange Way, with an annexe located at 8 Kew Bridge. GSG also runs Kew Green Prep, Ravenscourt Park Prep and Maida Vale School.

The proposal would require no significant changes to the exterior of the building other than the amendment of one of the existing double doors on the front façade to a single door and the replacement of glazing within four bays of the curtain wall with louvres. A double door would be required to give access to the fitness suite.

The school says it has ample parking at the Capital Interchange Way site and it does not anticipate the presence of the annexe would create significant amounts of traffic movement. Pupils and staff would be expected to walk between the two sites.
