20 Metre High Mast Planned for Dukes Avenue |

Mobile phone company wants it to be situated near A4
An application has been made to Hounslow Council to determine if prior approval is required for a proposed 20 metre high mobile telecommunications mast on Dukes Avenue. The application is being made by CK Hutchison Networks (UK) which runs the Three network. The 5G mast along with three green equipment cabinets would be place on the western side of the road on what is currently a grass verge near the junction with Ellesmere Road (A4). Documents submitted with the application state that it will be 295 metres from St. Mary's Primary School. The applicant argues that there is an 'acute need' for a new mast in this location as existing mast sites are not capable of supporting additional equipment to extend coverage reach across the target area and prospective ‘in-fill’ mast sites are extremely limited. They say the height of the proposed street pole is the minimum required to bring the benefits of 5G to this area. 5G operates across multiple spectrums and therefore requires additional antennas and new equipment cabinets. The signals that are broadcast are more prone to the shadowing effect of adjacent buildings or structures, and also the effect of tree canopies reducing the broadcast range and effectiveness of the antennas. Consequently, the height of the 5G antennas needs to be raised meaning such high masts, dubbed ‘monster masts’ by objectors will become more common. The higher frequencies that 5G will use can provide more bandwidth and thus greater capacity but the signal will not travel as far as those of previous generations. This will mean that more of these masts will need to be built than were needed for earlier mobile technology. The application reference is PA/2021/4677. Guidance given by government to local authorities means that objections solely on the basis of the health impact of the masts will not be considered.
