Historic Church Street Post Office To Be Turned into Flat

A plan has been submitted to Hounslow Council to turn the historic former Post Office in Church Street into a studio flat.
The building next to the Hogarth Roundabout dates back to the 18th century and is listed but the ground floor part with the old shop frontage has been vacant for some time.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a major figure in the Enlightenment, is reported to have resided at the address in 1766 when the area would have had the appearance of a rural village. In the Victorian era 6 Church Street was converted into a shop and was used as a greengrocer run by the Spencer family, a baker and a hairdressers before becoming a Post Office in 1942. The double fronted shop windows which remain facing Church Street are thought to have been installed during the nineteenth century.
Listed building consent is being sought for a change of use of the building to residential and for internal and external renovations. The space is too small for a one bedroom flat so permission is sought for a studio flat with a roof terrace at the rear.

The ground floor of the building is in a state of disrepair and was not well looked after by the previous owners according to the applicant. The Land Registry records a sale at the address for £235,000 earlier this year.

A statement submitted with the application states that the shop front is in a poor condition as it has been painted over many times and the windows no longer open. Nevertheless a commitment is made to restore the shop front and leave the overall appearance of the building unchanged.
