Queueing for a Christmas turkey at Macken Brothers is an annual tradition for many people in Chiswick but this year has seen a line of unprecedented length.

The queue on Christmas Eve reached all the way down Turnham Green Terrace and then snaked round into the High Road reaching as far as Mayfield Avenue.

Shoppers were reportedly waiting for up to five hours to collect their Christmas dinner in what Richard Osman described on Twitter as the biggest queues In Chiswick since the great falafel shortage of 2017.

There appear to have been a number of reasons why the queue was so long including the requirement for social distancing in the shop which meant that only four people were allowed in the shop at any one time. The butchers had also lost five key members of staff who were self isolating. In addition demand appears to have increased due to the preference of many people to make an extra effort to support local businesses this year particularly those on Turnham Green Terrace.

The waiving of parking restrictions on the day also meant that those in the queue using their car weren't at risk of getting a fine.

The queues were captured on film by Peter Hogan.
