Labour Selects Candidates for Remaining Seats in Chiswick | ||||
Transport chief Hanif Khan is to contest the Gunnersbury ward
The Labour Party completed its candidate selection process for the forthcoming elections this Monday evening (14 March) with the final six places allocated. A meeting the previous week had failed to reach agreement on the candidate slates for the Chiswick Riverside and Chiswick Gunnersbury wards. This time saw the return of two prominent councillors who had failed to gain selection for seats elsewhere in the borough – Hanif Khan and Mel Collins. Widely seen as the chief sponsor of the borough’s Streetspace measures, Hanif Khan previously failed to be selected for two other wards but now will be standing in Chiswick Gunnersbury where the Conservative candidates, Ron Mushiso, Jo Biddolph and Ranjit Gill, are incumbent councillors who have been vocal opponents of his policies. The two other Labour candidates in the ward are Uday Nagaraju, who is a founder and director of public policy think tanks and Emma Yates. Hanif Khan said in a video statement, “I’ve been a councillor for nearly eight years and in cabinet for nearly six years and that knowledge that I’ve acquired will be brought to you to help the residents of Gunnersbury.” In Chiswick Riverside ward there was another comeback from Mel Collins the long serving councillor who failed to gain selection in Brentford earlier in the month. Despite being 76 he was hoping to continue as a councillor. He has represented the Chiswick area in the past having been councillor for the former Gunnersbury ward (which later became Turnham Green). He will contest the seat with two other Labour candidates Gurbachan Atwal and Amy Croft. The Conservatives have reselected Gabriella Giles who will be running alongside Seb Wallace and Peter Thompson who previously served as Leader of Hounslow Council. The candidates to contest Chiswick Homefields ward were selected in an earlier meeting and Mukesh Malhotra, Saroosh Khan and Olivia Uwechue were chosen. They will be up against long serving Conservative councillors John Todd and Gerald McGregor as well as the newly selected Jack Emsley. Unofficially, Labour feel they have a strong chance in Chiswick Gunnersbury and hope to take some seats in Chiswick Homefields with Chiswick Riverside remaining a long shot.
