Local group meets monthly in Room2 on Windmill Road
Knitting is described as a different type of mindfulness practice
March 12, 2023
A new knitting group has been established in Chiswick which meets monthly to share a love of the craft.
It has been established by students of Carol Wheeler who is a knitting and crochet teacher. Carol worked as a Senior Civil Servant for the Intellectual Property Office dealing with patent application for mass spectrometers and plasma devices for 25 years.
During the Covid lockdown she re-discovered her passion for knitting and crochet and set up a small business called Knit With Me to share these skills. It teaches people to knit and crochet in Chiswick, Richmond and Hammersmith.
Group members are encoruaged to try challenging designs
Carol says, “Knitting has improved my wellbeing in a way other therapies have not been able to touch and I genuinely want to share this with as many people as I can. “
She believes that knitting reduces stress and anxiety, improves cognitive function and boosts self-confidence and helps with depression. She describes it as a different type of mindfulness practice that provides a feel-good effect and a sense of control.
Once a month her students meet up in Room2 in Windmill Road to share their love of these crafts, meet new people and feel inspired to try new projects.
The group meets once a month to share ideas
Carol adds, “This social interaction is now the highlight of their month and we are having to add more and more tables to accommodate everyone. It is a very joyful sight full of colour and texture and has helped with feeling otfisolation felt by many of the people who come along. It is open to anyone, students or not. They can come along to see what al the fuss is about, to sit and knit with others or to ask people how they found the lessons before booking themselves. They can book in for the Knit & Natter social event each month at www.knitwithme.co.uk/events.”
