More details about the plans for the redevelopment of Chiswick Health Centre have been revealed at a public consultation event at the centre this Wednesday (23 October).

The main new piece of information disclosed was the plan to relocate services to the Stamford Brook Centre on Stamford Brook Avenue. This is variously described as being 0.7 or 0.8 miles away from the existing facility but when we measured the distance on Google it suggested it was 0.9 miles by foot and 1.2 miles by car.

The presentation boards said that all GP services would be transferred to the new temporary location. Currently three surgeries operate from the centre Chiswick Health Practice, West 4 GPs and Chiswick Family Doctors Practice. Over 20,000 people are registered for treatment at the centre. No mention is made of the future of Chiswick Dental Practice.

No indication of timescales were given by the representatives of the NHS at the consultation event who said that completion of the project would depend on the planning process. It is likely that the rebuilding process would take two years from the granting of planning approval. A separate planning application will be needed for a change of use at the Stamford Brook Centre which was previously the location of the Hammersmith and Fulham Learning Disabilities team.

The NHS say that the plans are ‘healthcare led’ and have been assessed by the Hounslow Clinical Commissioning Group. The lack of funds for health services has required sites to be development to get revenue from property sales to fund the new facility. They will see the site developed into a 4-6 block with a new 2,500 sq m medical centre at the eastern end by the junction with Fishers Lane and 48 flats including five wheelchair accessible units at the western end. Both buildings will be set around a central courtyard.

Layout of new chiswick health centre

The new medical centre will be of a size sufficient to cope with growing demand for health services in the area according to the presentation boards. It is envisaged that the Chiswick centre will be one of six hubs in the borough which will provide enhanced out of hospital care from GPs and other community providers.

The existing building is run down and no longer provides a suitable location for improved health services with the situation on the first floor requiring a long ramp which causes inconvenience to many users of the centre.

The consultation event was crowded but a very limited space had been set aside for the presentation boards. When we spoke to attendees at the event about the plans the main concern was about the intended site of the relocation. One user of the centre said, “There is very easy access to the centre currently with buses serving Dolman Road and the Clifton Gardens stop on Chiswick High Road. There is a five minute walk for an able bodied person from all the public transport options at the Stamford Brook Centre which will be a lot longer for the elderly or someone with a mobility disability.

Details of the scheme can be seen on the project web site. Feedback on the plans must be sent through by 6 November to chiswickhealthcentre@mpc.email.
