Transport for London (TfL) has announced that Gunnersbury station will be closed for an hour following the final whistle at matches at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The station which serves both London Underground and Overground will be exit-only for a period of 60 minutes to reduce the risk of a crush.

The scheme was introduced last weekend for Brentford FC’s friendly fixture with West Ham United and will now apply for all of the team’s home games as well as those of London Irish.

A one-way system is also being put in place from around two hours before kick-offs. This will mean that station users will only be able to enter the station at the Grange Road / Wellesley Road entrance.

The next game is on Saturday 7 August at 5.30pm, so restrictions on entering the station will apply between 7.15pm and 8.15pm approximately.

In a letter to station users TfL says, “We are doing this to ensure the safety of our customers. The decision to keep the station open to those exiting only – as opposed to closing the station entirely – was made to ensure that people living and working in the Gunnersbury area are still able to travel home or to work without disruption.”

Before the pandemic there was increasing concern about overcrowding at Gunnersbury station and queueing had to be introduced on occasion to restrict access to the station.
