Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall led to flash floods across Chiswick this Wednesday (17 August) with some roads rendered impassable.

Over 33mm of water is understood to have fallen in just one hour in parts of the W4 postcode area.

Some shops on Chiswick High Road were forced to close and a number of basements were flooded as drains, blocked with dried leaves, were unable to cope with the excess water.

One of the businesses affected was The Proud Project, a new Pilates and yoga studio, at 227-229 Chiswick High Road.

Having just launched they were forced to shut down and spend all Wednesday evening and most of Thursday cleaning up so that they can be ready for customers at the weekend. They offer a wide selection of Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates and yoga classes 7 days a week, from as early as 6:30am until 8:30pm.

Christina Fell, from The Proud Project said, “We did spend all evening and all day today cleaning up so that we can re-open to our customers on Saturday! But we’ll have the studio looking perfect again in no time!”

Flash floods are common after a prolonged period of dry weather as water finds it more difficult to permeate dry ground and runs off dehydrated surfaces rather than being absorbed.

The sudden downpour came just as Thames Water announced that a hosepipe ban would be put in place on 24 August. Although more rain is predicted, it is not thought that the ban will be rescinded.

The extreme temperatures seen over the last few weeks are not forecast to continue but it will remain warm and the amount of rainfall expected less dramatic than was seen this week.
