Fairyland Nursery on Barley Mow Passage
Ofsted has recently published a report on a Chiswick nursery in which the inspector concluded that the safety and well-being of children attending was being put at potential risk.
The Fairyland Nursery on Barley Mow Passage, which opened in 2018, was visited this July. The inspector rated the quality of education as well as behaviour and attitudes as ‘Requires Improvement’ but leadership and management was rated ‘Inadequate’.
Particular concern was raised about mealtime supervision with the risk of a child choking while unobserved by a member of staff.
The inspector’s report stated, “Although children feel safe in the care of staff, their safety and well-being are put at potential risk. Staff do not consistently and effectively supervise children while they are eating. This puts children at risk of possible accidents, such as choking. At times, the required staff-to-child ratio is not met, including the qualified staff ratio.”
It was found that at mealtimes and on trips outside the nursery, sometimes children were being supervised by staff with no relevant First Aid training.
The inspector also noticed that on trips to a local park, staff focused on the older children packing away the toys brought before there was a chance to play with them.
It was found that the staff felt supported by management and their well-being was promoted effectively but supervision of staff was deemed insufficient. The staff were described as ‘warm and caring’.
The feedback from parents that the inspectors spoke to was positive and they said that the communication from the nursery about their child’s development was a positive aspect of the service.
The nursery's opening times are 7.30am to 6.30pm, each weekday, throughout the year. It employs 10 members of staff to work with the children. At the time of the report, six held relevant early years qualifications at level 3 or above. The nursery receives funding to provide free early years education to
children aged two, three and four.
The inspector made a series of recommendation as to how the rating of the nursery could be improved including ensuring that a qualified first aider always accompanies children on trips, more effective deployment of staff at mealtimes and that the the required staff-to-child ratios, including qualified staff, are consistently met.
We approach Fairyland Nursery for comment but haven’t received a response.
