Reports of a man armed with a knife caused alarm in the Edensor Road area last Thursday with a local primary school going into 'lockdown' as a precautionary measure.

Police said that they were called to the area of Edensor Road near Cavendish on Thursday 12 December at 12:41pm, after the man was spotted.

Officers attended and, despite an extensive search, the suspect was not located.

As a precaution a local school was advised by officers to lock their gates due to the proximity of the incident.

Cavendish Primary School said, "We can confirm that the police called us at approximately 12:50pm to advise us that they had received a report that a man with a weapon had been seen in an area near to the school and that we should keep the children inside.

"We immediately initiated our lockdown procedures and two police officers arrived shortly afterwards. We were informed that a man had been seen carrying a knife in Edensor Road and the police were concerned that he may have presented a threat to the school.

"As a precaution, they also dispatched some additional police officers and vehicles to search the area. At about 1330, the police officers told us that they were satisfied there was no longer a risk to the school. Please be aware that at no point were there any intruders on the school premises.

"We would like to pay tribute to the highly professional, calm and efficient way in which the staff implemented our procedures and the prompt and sensible way the children responded to instructions.

"We were also reassured by the fact that the police prioritised the safety of our school and are grateful for the positive feedback we have received from several parents."

There were no injuries reported and no arrests made.

The police are continuing their enquiries.
