Local residents have again been the victim of attacks by robbers on moped.

A young woman was assaulted while walking home on Thursday evening (16 May), near Chiswick Back Common.

Two men on mopeds confronted her and, when she refused to tell them her number or hand over her phone, one of them punched her in the face.

They then made off and she ran to a nearby pizza restaurant for help and the police were alerted. So far there have been no arrests.

A similar attack was reported near Stamford Brook station this week. The victim escaped unhurt.

The Met have set up Operation Venice to tackle moped enabled crime across London and have introduced a wide range of tactics to combat this sort of offence. This includes use of DNA forensic tagging spray, automatic tyre deflation devices and slim-line motorcycles. Figures released towards the end of last year showed that the operation had been successful overall in reducing this kind of crime but there appeared to be some displacement of offending possibly due to resources being concentrated in particular areas and incidents had risen sharply in Hounslow and Ealing borough.
