Bedford Park worst affected with nine cases in most recent week
The total disappearance of the Covid-19 virus from the Chiswick area has proven to be temporary with the number of cases bouncing back in some neighbourhoods. The Bedford Park area appears to have been the worst affected recently with 9 new cases in the week to 10 May. This equates to an infection rate per 100,000 population of 130.6. Other parts of the W4 postcode area which in previous weeks had also seen zero reported cases are now registering positive tests. There are fears that infections could rise further with more indoor mixing to be allowed from this Monday (17 May). Local boroughs remain the parts of London with the highest infection rate with Hounslow top with 44 and Ealing second with 38. A local GP said, “The critical question here is whether or not these new infections are of the B.1.617.2 Indian mutation of the virus. We won’t know the answer to this immediately until further analysis has been done. If it proves to be the case that they are then surge testing and surge vaccinations will be implemented in the area. “I would remind people that the loosening of restrictions means that more things are being allowed but they are not being made mandatory so you should still exercise caution if you feel it is appropriate. It doesn’t matter how many jabs you have had if a new virus resistant strain emerges.” There have been 400 confirmed cases of the mutation in London so far with around a quarter of these believed to be from people who have recently travelled to the Indian sub-continent. Professor Kevin Fenton, London director of Public Health England, said, “We are working closely with local public health teams and borough councils to increase targeted and community testing where needed and implement whole genome sequencing and enhanced contact tracing where cases have been identified.” “The best thing Londoners can do to avoid catching or spreading this and all variants is to get tested, get vaccinated when offered, and keep to the basics of Hands, Face, Space and Fresh Air.” The Prime Minister has said that the new variant is an ‘area of concern’ and that there is a wide range of expert opinions about its likely impact.
Up to and including 9 May 3,739,915 people in London had received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine and 1,790,318 had received two doses. On 13 May the daily number of new people tested positive for Covid-19 in London was reported as 299 The total number of COVID-19 cases identified in London is 722,881 as at 12 May, this compares to 3,882,574 cases for England as a whole In the week to 8 May, 1,712 cases were identified in London, a rate of 19 cases per 100,000 population. This compares with 1,772 cases and a rate of 20 for the previous week. In the same period 12,421 cases were identified in England as a whole, a rate of 22 cases per 100,000 population. This compares with 12,788 cases and a rate of 23 for the previous week.
