Graffiti scrawled over Grade I listing buildings
A clean up has been taking place at Chiswick House & Gardens following an attack of vandalism (6 April) with a number of structures in the grounds defaced by graffiti. It appears to be the first known incident of this kind in the Grounds. The police said there had been reports of similar incidents in Gunnersbury Park and Brentford and have asked for anyone with information to come forward. "We are running an operation to try and identify those who are causing this criminal damage and would welcome anybody who could assist us with any information on this," said a spokesman. A spokesperson for the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust said; "We are all appalled by the damage incurred to these beautiful edifices, as are our colleagues at English Heritage. The Ionic Temple and the Classic Bridge are within EH’s guardianship. They have swiftly organised for treatment on the graffiti to take place." The trust that manages the gardens say that they have already had offers of help from the local community to clear up the damage. However, their spokesperson said that, although they are gratified by the support, removing the damage is not simply a matter of turning up with a brush and a bucket of soapy water. Specialists have to be employed to ensure that the buildings can be restored without any permanent damage. The police are recording the marks made and comparing them with graffiti in other areas in an attempt to identify the culprits. The clean-up has now been taking place.
